Question:
My daughter is 15 months old and needs her immunizations this month. In addition to the regular shots, I'd like her to have a TB test. How long do I have to wait between the test and the actual TB shot?
JJ
Answer:
Prior BCG vaccination is not a contraindication for PPD skin testing. Both PPD testing and BCG vaccination can in some cases result in a strong local skin reaction with swelling, pain, redness and occasional ulceration at the injection site. It's permissible to administer the tuberculin skin test EITHER on the same day that live-virus immunization is administered OR 4-6 weeks later. I'm not clear from what you say below if you are intending to first have the child have a PPD test and then a BCG vaccination.... if you are, suggest you discuss this with your paediatrician. Hope this helps.
