Question:

Dear Doctor, Very recently I've noticed that blood vessels particularly in my legs seem to have come to the surface and are possibly bluer in colour, therwise there are no symptoms of anything untoward. I know that something of this kind is nevitable with age, but I'm still only 28 and pretty fit so I think it is a little early for varicose veins, not to mention which it has happened in such a short space of time. So is this a symptom of anything I should worry about, and if not what can I do by way of exercise or diet to get rid of it.

Thank you for your inquiry, Varicose veins are veins close to the skin that are twisted, swollen or stretched. Factors that contribute to having varicose veins include pregnancy and sitting or standing for extended periods of time. It is possible to have varicose veins at your age but this is not usual specially for fit people as exercise is something we recommend to help prevent varicose veins (maintains good muscle tone and circulation). In this instance, It would be appropriate to consult your family doctor to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment possibilities. Simple modalities of treatment that could help include elevating your legs as much as possible (when sitting or propping them up with pillow when lying down) and exercising your calf muscles when you sit for extended periods of time(raise heels up and down). Wearing support hoses might also be recommend if the diagnosis is confirmed.
