Question:

A sort of spot of hard skin appeared on my scalp last year, I scratched it a lot at the beginning which made it bleed. Since I have left it along, it seems to have recovered but there is a small bald patch left by this spot, could this be something serious or should I just wait a little longer. I had quite a stressful year last year and had some dandruff, could this be related to it?.

Thanks for your inquiry Without having a doctor see it - difficult to say precisely (sorry). The balance of probabilities is that it is what it appears to be - a bald spot where the hair follicles have been damaged and therefore no hair grows there any more. Trouble is, probabilities take no account of individual factors. You don't mention age, or where you come from for example, which may shift the balance of probable diagnosis. With most medical diagnosis and definitely with skin conditions, examination with the Mk I eyeball is to be preferred; seeing and examining it will tell the doctor if the condition can, as is likely, be left entirely alone, or if it is necessary (as is unlikely) to need a biopsy. We can say there is no cause/effect link to "dandruff" however. Regards
