Question:

I was diagnosed with gonorrhea of the throat and put on Cipro. Is this the correct medication for this infection? Can I spread it by using glasses, dishes or is it spread only in true gonorrhea style?

Thank you for your inquiry. Cipro (usual dose in this case 500 mg) is generally satisfactory treatment for gonorrhea; one assumes the organism was / will be cultured in the lab and its nature and antibiotic sensitivities confirmed (by a swab taken from the urethra) - as some strains of the organism especially those acquired in Asia and parts of the US are resistant to fluoroquinolones. It is not spread by using glasses or dishes etc. but partner(s) should be tested regardless of lack of apparent symptoms, to prevent cross- and re-infection; and anyone with the diagnosis of gonorrhea should be tested for other STDs. Hope this helps
