Hi doctor. I was wondering during the course of a chlamydia treatment (7 days one dose of antibiotic) if I had sex could I have reinfected myself, or if I have symptoms, did I get it from my partner? Also does trich. cause yellow mucus discharge on the cervix. Thanks for the info. (I have already seen my doctor for treatment)

It is always possible to reinfect if you practise unsafe sex. The incubation period for genital chlamydia infections is usually about a week, but can be longer. As many people do not develop symptoms immediately, it can be difficult to tell when you were infected. It is very important to tell your sex partners that you have chlamydial infection so that they can be tested and treated. If not, you will remain at risk of reinfection. Trichomonas is a parasitic infection which can cause a foul smelling and frothy green discharge, not usually a yellowy discharge. However the only way to know if you are infected is to have a lab test, as up to 50% women do not have any symtoms. Trichomonas can be treated effectively with antibiotics (but a different kind from the treatment given for chlamydia). Likewise with trichomonas it is also important that your partner is treated. You have done the right thing by seeing your doctor for treatment. If you use safe sexual practices (including using a condom) all the time, you will significantly reduce the risk of contracting further sexually transmitted diseases.
