Question:

My boyfriend was told that he has Chlymadia. He went to the clinic the other day and they gave him 4 pills that he had to take all at once and then he would be good. My gynocologist gave me pills and I was to take two a day for a week. Do they both work? Why wouldn't my doctor just give me the pills that I could take all at once and be done with it. Please help! My boyfriend wants to have sex but I'm not really sure if he's clean.

In this case it is important to know what medicines the doctor gave both you and your boyfriend in order to answer your question accurately - and if the doctors did not explain to either of you what they were giving and why they were giving it, we recommend you call your doctor(s) and get the answers now. In general, certain antibiotics work equally well when used for a longer time as other antibiotics when taken for a shorter time. Also, sexually transmitted bacterial diseases are - as a generalization - "harder" to treat effectively in women compared to men, because of different anatomy and physiology. "2 pills a day for a week" sounds like Doxycycline which is appropriate treatment for chlamydia - your boyfriend may have received single dose treatment with something like Azithromycin. But be sure that his treatment has been effective; with any STD it is preferable not to have sex until both partners are effectively treated. These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.
