Question:
I have been on a reduced-calorie diet for the past two weeks, and have noticed little change. I have also upped my exercise a bit. Yesterday, I had a strenuous workout (more than an hour on a treadmill) and afterward tested for ketones. To my surprise, the test was negative. Does this mean I am not burning fat even after an hour of aerobit exercise? Am I burning something other than fat?

Dear Roger,
Testing your urine immedicately after exercising may not reflect what your metabolism is actually doing. It can take some hours after exercise before ketones appear in the urine. If your caloric expenditure exceeds your caloric intake, you will start metabolising fat as your energy source.
